Georg Simmel, 1858-1918

Berlin sociologist and philosopher.  Argued that society is outcome of interactions of individuals and groups, and so it is the interactions, rather than the individuals or social institutions themselves, that need to be studied.  He is particularly concerned with analyzing how the size of a group affects the nature of the interaction as well as how it impacts social culture and the individual's own psychology.  Simmel's work on money (1900) relates the breakdown of "trust", reciprocity and primitive relations to the emergence of monetary exchange.
