COURSE
DESCRIPTION
This course is structured to provide each student with a methodology of defining
Design. First semester students acquire a firm understanding of the elements
and principles of 2 Dimensional Design, and a Design vocabulary. Basic elements
of line, plane, shape, figure ground, value relationships, organization principles,
and color are introduced through assignments. Projects become increasingly complex
over the course of the semester. Both analog and digital solutions and realized.
The Design Lab is unique in that it does not divide the essential information
into either analogue or digital design. Design Lab projects combine traditional
methods and digital methods to create a heightened awareness of the 2D visual
world. This Class equips students with a variety of ways to translate their
observations.
Fundamentals of Design are addressed in this class. Students will gain awareness
and understanding regarding the workings of visual communication. Problem solving
techniques are encouraged and developed through assignments.
LEARNING
OBJECTIVES
Upon successful completion of the course, a student should possess the following
abilities:
1. the ability to recognize and to create a unified graphic or pictorial design
by applying the Principles of 2D Design to the Elements of 2D Design, individually
and collectively
2. the ability to develop strategies of problem solving relevant to 2D Design
3. the ability to perceive, formulate, analyze and solve problems.
4. the ability to orally present, promote and critique solutions.
5. the ability to translate projects from analogue to digital solutions
6. to create and maintain a website for this class. Every week students will
post images and comments addressing the work completed for that week. This is
an ongoing portfolio.
7.the ability to articulate clearly ideas and analysis about design, art, visual
and technological culture.
