Project 1 - Line- Applied Variables

In Class Discussion: Types of line Visual Characteristics. The Importance of 2d Design Skills.

In Class Exercise: A point is a line with direction.

Point Exercise: Applied Variables. 1.Draw on the graph paper handed out in class. Draw a series of points create a simple line. 2. Draw with points and describe a geometric shape. 3. Draw with points and describe movement. 4. Draw with points and create a pattern. 5. Draw with a series of points and create an illusion of depth.

Line Exercise: Applied Variables. 1. Draw a series of lines with a gap between the lines decreasing from wide to narrow. 3. Draw a series of lines that change in equal intervals of height. 4.Draw a series of lines that change in width. 5. Draw a series of lines that you have invented.

Homework 1: Line Make Shape

Refer to our class discussion to invent solutions for this project. Define a set of Lines to use as variables. Sketches lines to make shapes. Use illustrator or draw by hand in your daybook with black magic markers. Design and execute 10 examples of closed linear shapes.

Choose two of your shapes and repeat in five different scales. Put each shape on piece of white paper- 8.5" x11". Do not make shape bigger than 8.5" x11".

For homework- take your favorite shape- Make the first composition with only the 5 different sizes - of one shape. Repeats shapes and sizes as many times as neccesary.

Choose a piece of white or black construction paper 24" by 36"as the background. Transfer your different shapes to either white or black construction paper. Do this with carbon or transfer paper. Then cut out from the opposite color paper your shapes and glue them down on the background. Be NEAT. Cut out as many shapes as necessary to create an engaging composition.

Finish and Bring this composition to class.

Bring all the following materials to next class:

the second group of 5 different sizes of the same shape--- and all of the following to make a second composition.

scissors, x-acto blades, some kind of glue- white or paste., transfer paper, thumb tacks, Black magic markers, Drafting tape, 3 pieces each of white and black construction paper. 24"x36". Templates of shapes made for homework. SKETCH BOOKS

Bring a Digital camera or disposable camera.

Homework 2 : Line Make Shape-Finish the 2nd composition

DUE:: next class September 20

Follow Steps
A.)
1.Use the second paper shape and complete a second composition.

2. Think about the compositions you saw in class. Which ones were the most engaging? which ones were weak?

3. Make small sketches and notes in your sketch book prior to beginning the second composition. Think about the vocabulary list.
Improve you design skills. Think about:
-mass/size/extension/scale, -shape/proportion, -position, -orientation, direction,-number frequency/density, -texture, focal point, -axis, -repetition, -alternation, - progression, -symmetry, -positive and negative, - figure/ground

more vocabulary

B.)
1.When the paper composition is finished, do the composition again in Illustrator. – or any drawing program.

2. Print out a small scale of it, 8” x 11” .

3.Save it to an external CD or USB. The image will be projected in class. Next class we will compare three versions and how they are made effects their outcome.

Materials for next class
3 different compositions- large format, small digital comp-printed out, and one digital version to be projected.
A digital camera- or a disposable camera.
