Concept- patterns, marks, combinations, figure ground:

Project 3:

::Photographic Type Exercise:: Your Name

::investigation: Size of letter and its texture, gesture, pattern, position. Does the image read well? : How do figure and ground relationships effect creating element of recognition for a name.

words to think about:ambiguous pattern, figure, recognition, embeddedness, camouflage, ground, gestalt, law of closure, morphing, focal point, movement of eye, marks, gesture.

Steps:

1.) In Photoshop. Make all images same size and resoulution. remember 180-300dpi for print, 72 for web.jpg. Save.

2.) Make a new file. Grey scale the new file.

3.) Arrange images of letters for you name in new file. Look at each letter, think about placement. The position of one letter to the next.

4.) Save final type image. Save one name collage in color and one in gray. which one is better? Load it to your web site.

Concept- Value

Project 3A:

Value-is an achromatic* term that is defined along a continuum from white to black. This term is also used to describe light and dark color, not the intensity of the hue. Theoretically, the range of gray tones along the white-to-black continuum is infinite, each value depends on the varying amounts of white and black mixed together. Value can be used to communicate depth and distance visual texture and pattern, as well as to define edges and shapes of figures and forms. Value creates contrast between an object and its back ground or other figures or forms within the visual field. This contrast between light and dark communicates which forms are in front of others in the visual field and how far apart the forms are positioned.

*achromatic means without hue or colorless. White, gray, and black are achromatic or neutral because they lack color.

::Paper Value Exercise::9 Step Value Scale

::investigation: range of gray is important because it can indicate depth and relative distance with in the visual field.

Objective- the objective of this exercise is to make a value scale out of gray colored paper. Find swatches of gray in magazines, or buying paper is fine too. Collect a range and cut 1" x1.5" squares. Line up the squares and make a value scale of 9 steps. Clearly distinguish between the 9 steps moving from from white to black. The ability to see equal steps of gray will help in detecting differences in chromatic and achromatic colors.

Materials. Magazine paper, cutting blades. metal rulers, cutting board.

Cut and paste on a piece of white illustration, bristol or cardboard. Size of board should be cut to 10" x 2". Place sqaures neatly, straight and center line on board.

FINISH FOR HOMEWORK.

Compositions

Project 3B:

For Excellent Explanation of Gestalt-http://www.seekpeace.com/gestalt/Gestalt.html

Gestalt is a German word meaning shape or form. In English gestalt refers to the concept where an entity's properties cannot be discovered from the total properties of its parts. The more general English equivalents are synergy, holism, emergence, and variations on the phrase "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts".

Gestalt is also a term used in Dungeons and Dragonsto represent a warrior/arcane mage multiclass combination or character concept, although the term can be more generally used to describe when the features of two or more classes are combined to create a 'mixed' class at first level (also known as taking apprentice levels.) In Dungeons and Dragons v3.5, gestalt is a varient rule from the sourcebook Unearthed Arcana which allows a character to simultaneously take two classes at once, gaining the abilities and strengths of both.

Fans of The Transformers (and to some degree Hasbro) use the term gestalt to refer to teams of robots which can combine together to form one large robot which is "stronger than the sum of its parts". This term may have been derived from the initial fantasy-oriented use in Dungeons and Dragons as described above.

::Photography Compositions Exercise::Value, Compositons & Gestalt

::investigation: the line and shapes in a compositon play an important roll in creating harmony. Value is important because it can indicate depth and relative distance with in the visual field.

Objective- define compositionally the following 13 principles/words of design in individual photogrpahs. If you have a digital camera - shoot in B&W setting. For each principles/words - photograph at least 6 examples. Total 78 images. Catalogue all photos. Select photo for each one of the 13 words. Then Save imge again to a 4" x 6" format. Save 13 images at 4" x 6" to a CD. If you have a printer- print. Bring CD to next class/

13 principles/words of design-1.Unity and Variety. 2. Repetition 3. Symmetry 4. Play of Opposing Forces5. Dominance 6. Orientation 7. Texture 8. Positive & Negative 9. Containment 10. Closure 11. Proximity 12. Scale and proportion 13. Focal Point

Materials- Digital Camera, Photoshop, photopaper, ink.

FINISH FOR HOMEWORK. Next Class- Images will be used in a "Group Collage"
