::investigation: the line and shapes in a composition play an important roll in creating harmony. Value is important because it can indicate depth and relative distance with in the visual field.

Objective- define compositionally the following 13 principles/words of design in individual photogrpahs. If you have a digital camera - shoot in B&W setting. For each principles/words - photograph at least 6 examples. Total 78 images. Catalogue all photos. Select photo for each one of the 13 words. Then Save imge again to a 4" x 6" format. Save 13 images at 4" x 6" to a CD. If you have a printer- print. Bring CD to next class/

13 principles/words of design-1.Unity and Variety. 2. Repetition 3. Symmetry 4. Play of Opposing Forces5. Dominance 6. Orientation 7. Texture 8. Positive & Negative 9. Containment 10. Closure 11. Proximity 12. Scale and proportion 13. Focal Point

Materials- Digital Camera, Photoshop, photopaper, ink.

 

  Class ASSIGNMENT - Large Collage
 

-split into groups

-using one image from each student work create a collage.

-put together a visualization of design and principles using the images.

-make a grid of images- think about visual structure.

-can you tell a story or is it lines shape and texture.

-work in class - groups finish collage for next class- bring to next class

 

MidTerm Assignment::Photographic fold book.

::investigation:Paper can create very pleasing relationships of shapes and planes.

Objective- use the SIX Organizing Principles and 6 of the 13 design words and design a visual book. The design of the book is to be creative. Use folded paper to build a surface to carry images from one surface to another. Use the planes and images as a way to tell a story, follow a day in your life, create a mood and relate design elements.

Criteria- A fluid movement from one image to the next. An engaging visualization of the objective. you may alter the image, and you may introduce text if it works as a design element. A well crafted book, neat edges, not messy.

Materials- photographs, bristol board or other weighted paper, photographs, spray mount or glue stick.

Final Due - October 24th.

 

  You will need to use the print center to make photographs for the book.It is your responsibility to visit 4th fl. UCC. Find out how to print.

Assignment::due next class::

1. Read the hand outs about folding paper to make a book.

2. Think about how you can - fold paper- make sketches in your sketch book.

3. Make 3 folded prototypes out of paper.

4. Decide on one and make it at full scale. full scale is approximately 6" x 6" for book when it is closed. Use Bristol board to make this-

5. print out 12-20 photos. USE Print Center.

6. bring all of the above materials to next class-- as well as x-acto blades, rulers, tape, glue stick, tape, cutting boards, anything you can think of.

7. during next class one-on-one meetings about content and design of book. mid term evaluation of progress in class
