This poster presentation focuses on the critical examination of the widely-circulated magazine among Taiwanese (Chinese) students from Taiwan studying in the United States of America published in Cambridge Massachusetts from 1972 to 1990.
Taiwan has gone through authoritarian ruling under Chinese Nationalist Party (a.k.a. Chinese Kuo-Ming Tang, Chinese KMT) for over half a century. Martial law was imposed in 1949 when Chiang Kai-shek, President of the Chinese Nationalist Government, and about two million supporters fled the advancing Communist army on the mainland. Before Chinese Nationalist Party's lifting the martial law in 1987, white-terror, 228 massacre, Formosa incident, and Tao-Yuan incident...etc. had occurred profusely in 4 decades.
Taiwan's first peaceful transfer of power in the history of civilization happened in March 2000 when Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP) leader Chen, Shui-bian became the president of Taiwan. Yet, transitional justice was rarely mentioned, let alone implemented by the new government over the past 8 years.
For both parties (Chinese KMT & DPP), many values have changed over years. As a new president will take the office in May 2008, it is of particular interest to many Taiwanese, Chinese, and American observers to re-examine them. Many of the editors of the magazine are now high ranked officials in Chinese Nationalist Party in Taiwan. One of the chief editors, Mr. Ma, Ying-Jeou, is now running for the presidency of Taiwan and thus the analysis of their processes of thoughts and words about Taiwan's democratic development and improvement during 1982-1990 becomes very worth investigating.
