The best/cheapest options for students are hostels:
The Jazz on the Town is just a few blocks away from the New School and very cheap.
The Jazz on the City is about a 20-minutes train ride away from the New School and has also cheap prices.
The West Side Inn is on the Upper West Side, close to Central Park and about a 25-minutes train ride away from the New School, but a little more expensive than the Jazz Hostels.
The Gershwin Hotel is in 20-minutes walking distance from the New School but also close to subway stops.
Among the most reasonable priced hotel accomodations in New York are the NY Inns:
The Union Square Inn is near Greenwich Village, just a few blocks away from the New School.
The Murray Hill Inn is a bit further away from the New School but also located in a nice neighborhood.
The Amsterdam Inn is on the Upper West Side, about a 20-minutes train ride from the New School, but the cheapest.
