Internship Opportunity: Belladonna Reading & Publication Series
The Belladonna* Internship
Mission Statement:
Belladonna* is a feminist/innovative reading and publication series that promotes the work of women writers who are adventurous, experimental, politically involved, multi-form, multicultural, multi-gendered, unpredictable, dangerous (courageous!) with language. The series has featured such writers as Erica Hunt, Fanny Howe, Mei-mei Berssenbrugge, Cecilia Vicuña, Lisa Jarnot, Camille Roy, Nicole Brossard, Abigail Child, Lydia Davis, Carla Harryman and Eileen Myles, among many other experimental and hybrid women writers. Beyond being a platform for women writers, we seek to promote work that is experimental in form, connects with other art forms, and is socially/politically active in content. Alongside the readings, Belladonna* supports its artists by publishing commemorative pamphlets of their work on the night of the event. Also we have hosted several ‘salons’ with featured writers, among them a discussion by Gail Scott and Carla Harryman on Narrative and the Sentence.
Each semester, Belladonna* offers an internship to college students. We look for interns that are reliable and organized. We have found the internship to be particularly rewarding to self-starters—since the position includes both routine tasks, and opportunites for creativity and innovative projects. We encourage our interns to find ways to infuse their particular interests and talents into the Belladonna* project, which is evolving, open-ended and democratic.
Responsibilities include:
- filling book orders
- updating and maintaining email lists
- assisting in the execution of PR mailings and fundraising mailings
- helping with the planning of readings and being an active participant in the orchestration of the readings themselves
- working on the production and editing of the “chaplets” and chapbooks
- additional tasks that may come up through out the season—research of poets, letter writing, etc.
Interested students may contact: Erica Kaufman, ericakaufman@hotmail.com
(Sample "chaplets" available in the BA Office.)
