Magazine Production Internship
PEN America, the biannual literary journal of PEN American Center, is
seeking a volunteer intern to assist with various stages of magazine
production. We are looking for someone who would be able to start working
ASAP, and continue working through the summer months. Our office is in Soho
with easy access to most subway lines.
Applicants must be detail-obsessed and familiar with Microsoft Word and the
Windows operating system. Previous office experience, either in publishing
or nonprofit organizations, is desirable, as is experience with the Chicago
Manual of Style, Claris FileMaker Pro, Qualcomm Eudora, Adobe InDesign, and
(X)HTML. Excellent communication skills and an interest in literature and
writing are a must.
Responsibilities may include the processing of subscriptions, proofreading,
fact-checking, library research, the transcription of literary events and
readings, assisting with mailings, and miscellaneous office tasks. The
intern will work approximately 10-15 hours per week, in concert with a
managing editor and an editorial staff.
PEN American Center, the largest of nearly 130 Centers worldwide that
compose International PEN, is a membership association of prominent
literary writers and editors. As a major voice of the literary community
the organization seeks to defend the freedom of expression wherever it may
be threatened, and promote and encourage the recognition and reading of
contemporary literature.
PEN America: A Journal for Readers and Writers was first published in
January 2001 and it was immediately (retroactively, in fact) named one of
the Ten Best Magazines of 2000 by Library Journal. Each issue contains a
mix of new and reprinted essays, fiction, memoir, poems, event transcripts,
interviews, and short commentary. The journal features symposia in which
authors discuss issues of relevance to anyone who cares about the written
word-changing modes of censorship, the need for new translations, the
legacies of literary forebears, methods of craft. The journal's growing
readership includes some of our greatest living writers, as well as
influential editors in publishing houses and multiple readers in libraries.
Those interested in applying may e-mail a cover letter, resume, and writing
sample to journal@pen.org, or phone (212) 334-1660, ext. 115 for more
information.
