Literacy Artist's Assistant's Internship

Learning Through Art:Literacy Artist's Assistant's Internship Description

Learning Through Art (LTA) is a curriculum-based arts education program serving public school students throughout New York City. Twenty week residencies are conducted by visual artists who collaborate with classroom teachers to design unique projects based on their school curriculum and the Museum's exhibitions and architecture. LTA is currently conducting a two-year study funded by the U.S. Department of Education to research the impact of our program on literacy and is looking for a Literacy Artist's Assistant to help with residencies involved in this study. The internship would be two days per week. One day of the week would be spent as an assistant to a Teaching Artist. The other day of the week would alternate between assisting three classroom teachers during the literacy periods in which they will use artwork to teach certain literacy skills and working at the Guggenheim Museum to prepare materials and research for these lessons. Literacy Artist's Assistants will work from October through May.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Working with a teaching artist to conduct curriculum-based workshops
  • Helping to maintain an organized classroom, including monitoring art supplies, and setting up and cleaning up the work space
  • Working with students one-on-one and in small groups
  • Documenting the workshop through photographs and observations
  • Assisting Teaching Artists and teachers with image and content research
  • Attending ''study group'' sessions in which teachers meet with Teaching Artists to plan their literacy lessons that involve artwork
  • Helping teachers acquire electronic, color copy, or poster versions of artwork reproductions teachers would like to show in the classroom
  • Setting up a multimedia projector, or other kind of image-viewing device, for teachers prior to the literacy lesson
  • Staffing LTA events as necessary

We also encourage Artist's Assistants to work with the Teaching Artist to develop and teach arts-related lessons.

LTA makes every attempt to ensure that these internships provide participants with teaching experience, related professional development, and an opportunity to observe and discuss NYC public school culture and policies. To this end, Artist's Assistants may also participate in the following professional development programs:
  • Pre-program orientation session in October
  • Training in how to give tours to elementary students in the Guggenheim Museum
In exchange for their work the museum can arrange for students to receive college or internship credit, as allowed by the school. Other perks include free admission to museums across the country and discounts at the Guggenheim café and gift shop. The internship is, otherwise, unpaid.
