Summer Internship Position
Workforce Development/Strategic Operations
Agency Description:
The Department of Small Business Services (SBS) makes it easier for companies in New York City to form, do business and grow by providing direct assistance to business owners, fostering neighborhood development in commercial districts, promoting financial and economic opportunity among minority- and women-owned businesses, preparing New Yorkers for jobs and linking employers with a skilled and qualified workforce.
Unit Description:
The Office of Media Relations and the Communications Unit manage all external and internal communications initiatives for the Agency, including but not limited to press releases and inquires, ad campaigns, public relations, branding, presentations, newsletters, and the Commissioner’s special projects.
Internship Responsibilities:
SBS seeks to hire two highly-motivated and well-organized communications interns for summer 2004. The interns will work at the SBS office and report to the Press Secretary and the Chief of Staff. The internship will be writing and research intensive. Responsibilities will encompass a wide array of programs, new initiatives and Agency operations including answering press calls; writing and editing press releases; corresponding with City Hall, other City agencies, and community organizations; compiling reports to City Hall; conducting research on small businesses in New York City; taking trips to City neighborhoods to meet, interview and identify small business “success stories”; and liaising between key Agency staff members on a variety of Agency initiatives.
QUALIFICATIONS/SPECIAL SKILLS/AREAS OF STUDY:
1. Strong writing, analytical and organizational skills
2. Communicate clearly and effectively
3. Quantitative/Qualitative analysis
4. Excellent interpersonal skills
5. Understanding of business terms and language
6. Familiarity with New York City neighborhoods and economic development
