The Documentary Form
Without Apology (1hr., 13min.)
Beta
Without Apology is a personal documentary about a family's "dark
secret": a brother, Alan, who was born with striking blue eyes and
a developmental disability so severe he would never develop the
ability to speak. Institutionalized at the age of eight, he immediately
became the family's taboo subject. The filmmaker turns the
camera on herself and her family as she attempts to trace the
source of so much sorrowful silence. From there she pursues the
elusive but clear outlines of a renewed relationship with her
brother.
