PUBLIC HEALTH ADVOCATE VOLUNTEER POSITION 2005-2006

The Peer Health Advocates (PHAs) will assist in the development and delivery of health promotion campaigns and events in collaboration with the Health Educator.

PHAs will participate as their interests and schedules permit to actively implement the mission and goals of the Health Education program at New School University. Some activities, such as trainings and planning meetings, will be required.

  • PHAs may facilitate interactive health education programs in classes, residence halls and public spaces;
  • they may develop promotional materials and web-based applications;
  • they may research college health topics;
  • they may assist in the administrative and logistical tasks associated with program development and delivery; other duties as assigned.

This volunteer position is a leadership position that will allow the participant to cultivate public speaking skills, social marketing skills and related competencies. All participants will receive training relevant to their role within the program. Participants will be evaluated based on their performance per the goals established mutually with the Health Educator. All participants are expected to respect diversity and confidentiality.

Successful applicants will have a good attitude, willingness to learn, interest in peer education and will display qualities of responsibility, maturity and professionalism when performing their duties as a Peer Health Advocate. PHAs should exhibit initiative, trustworthiness and be capable of work independently and as part of a dynamic team. PHAs are expected to role-model healthy behavior; any illegal or excessive drug or alcohol use will be investigated and may be grounds for dismissal from this position.

  • Eating disorders
  • Mental health
  • Self-esteem
  • Nutrition
  • Safety
  • Sexuality, safer sex and sexual pleasure
  • Assertiveness & Communication
  • Alcohol use, lower-risk behaviors
  • How to Help a Friend
  • Marijuana and other drug use
  • Body image
