Grants for Study/Research in Germany
The DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst/German Academic Exchange Service) has announced its annual competition for grants for study and research in Germany.
DAAD Study Scholarships are available to undergraduate seniors and graduate students who wish to pursue course work at German universities. These grants are intended to cover ten months of study (October 1, 2006 to July 31, 2007), and provide stipends ranging from €715 to €795 ($890 to $990) per month. The DAAD will also provide health insurance and a generous allowance for travel costs. Students who enter German degree programs may be eligible for an extension of the grant for up to two academic years.
DAAD Research Grants are available either on a short-term (1 to 6 months) or long-term (7 to 10 months) basis. Short-term grants must be used between August 1, 2006 and January 31, 2007. Long-term grants may be used at any time during the German academic year (October 1, 2006 to July 31, 2007). The competition for this award is open to graduate students, Ph.D. candidates, post-doctoral researchers, and assistant professors. Stipends range from €715 to €975 ($890 to $1,214) per month depending on level of advancement. As with the Study Scholarship, the DAAD will provide health insurance and cover travel costs.
US or Canadian citizens are eligible for grants. Citizens of other countries may be eligible if they have been enrolled at The New School for a minimum of two academic years at the time they apply, but must in all cases contact the New York office of the DAAD (212-758-3223) to determine whether they qualify. Recipients of Study Scholarships and long-term Research Grants must be no more than 32 years of age at the start of their grant period. Short-term grant recipients must be no older than 36 when their grant period begins.
Applications will be judged on the basis of academic achievement, the merit of the study plan or research project, and the need for a period of study or research at a German institution of higher learning. While Scholarship and Grant recipients are expected to have some knowledge of the German language at the time they take up their award, a high level of proficiency in German is not required in order to apply.
Additional information and application forms can be found at www.daad.org. Questions on the competition may be directed to Henry Watkin, Coordinator of International Exchanges, New School for Social Research, 65 Fifth Avenue, Room 101, New York, NY 10003, 212-229-5710, WatkinH@newschool.edu.
Applications must be submitted to Henry Watkin at the address mentioned above no later than October 28, 2005. A University committee will decide which applications will be sent on to the DAAD for consideration. The final decision regarding scholarship and grant awards rests entirely with the DAAD’s selection committee. Results of the competition will be announced toward the end of March 2006.
