NYC ImMigrant Heritage Trail- Summer Research Intern
Project background:
The Lower East Side Tenement Museum's mission is to promote tolerance and historical perspective through the preservation and interpretation of the variety of immigrant and migrant experiences on Manhattan's Lower East Side, gateway to America. Through its tours and programs, the Museum is committed to offering history as a tool for addressing contemporary issues, especially those relating to immigration.
Currently, the Museum is working on a new project called the NYC ImMigrant Heritage Trail. To be first made available on the web, and encompassing all five boroughs, this Trail will feature historic sites, museums, and cultural centers associated with the City's immigrant/migrant cultures. It will also feature contemporary immigrant/migrant neighborhoods and historic and contemporary bibliographies of books, articles and music. The NYC ImMigrant Heritage Trail may serve as a prototype for a national American ImMigrant Heritage Trail.
Task Description of Research Intern:
The intern will assist the ImMigrant Heritage Project Associate to develop the NYC ImMigrant Heritage Trail. The intern will:
- Conduct survey of properties in the LES national historic district;
- Research historic, cultural, artistic and culinary sites related to the immigrant experience in NYC;
- Expand the database of sites in Manhattan and the other boroughs to be featured in the Trail;
- Identify potential partners and generate a list of contacts;
- Develop a list of additional resources on the immigrant experience, such as books, videos, activities and events;
- Research public transportation and parking facilities in NYC; and
- Work with museum staff and web designer to develop prototype of website.
Position will run May through September, hours are flexible.
REQUIRED QUALITIES:
Excellent research, communication, organization and writing skills required. Possess strong interest in the NYC immigrant experience. Knowledge of cultural institutions, service agencies, businesses, and transportation systems in Manhattan is helpful. Understanding of web design is highly desirable.
