WEB PRODUCTION AND RESEARCH INTERNSHIP AT P.O.V. INTERACTIVE

DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS: MONDAY, APRIL 17, 2006

P.O.V. (point-of-view) is the longest-running showcase of documentary films on American television. P.O.V. programs have won every major television award, including the Emmy, Peabody, Columbia-Dupont and Academy Awards. Our 19th season begins in June on PBS and continues through October. You can explore the lineup of programs at www.pbs.org/pov/tvschedule.html.

We are looking for a really fantastic, versatile intern to help us out in our downtown Manhattan office with production and research for our award-winning websites.

Along with the central P.O.V. website, www.pbs.org/pov, we create a companion website for every film in our season. These sites extend the life of our films beyond broadcast to promote learning, civic engagement and community building online. Companion sites include Web-exclusive articles and video, various interactive features, lesson plans and discussion guides, behind-the-lens interviews with emerging and career documentary filmmakers and production journals for each film. Working with us, you'll have the chance to be involved in substantive public-interest website development from brainstorm to launch.

We'll also be building up to the April launch of the third installment of P.O.V.'s Borders (www.pbs.org/pov/borders/), our web-original series, which will explore the myths and realities of being American in today's world.

What type of person are we seeking? First and foremost, you'll need to have a demonstrated interest and curiosity about the Web. While you will get an inside peek into the world of documentary film production and public television, our department makes websites, and you'll spend most of your time thinking technically and creatively about the online medium.

We are looking for someone with experience in basic HTML coding and image editing programs like Photoshop and Illustrator, but we are open to training you if you are a quick study and have the desire to build experience in these areas. There may also be opportunities to work with web video and audio editing programs. You'll need to be comfortable working both on Macs
and PCs.

A large part of our work involves community building online, and we'll also need your help moderating our discussion boards, which are often the site of lively discussion and debate, and answering email and phone calls from viewers. We're looking for someone who is friendly and comfortable corresponding professionally through email and over the phone.

Here are the most important traits we seek in our interns, in a nutshell:

* informed
* drawn to public interest web development
* professional and organized (really)
* experienced at research, both offline and online
* unafraid to try their hands at new tasks
* comfortable on the computer (both Macs and PCs)

We can offer compensation in the form of a monthly Unlimited Metrocard to interns who commit to working three or more days a week. We're also willing to explore college credit options.

To apply for this internship, please send an email with the subject: "Web Internship" along with a cover letter and résumé to internships@pov.org. (No phone calls, please.) Take a chance with your cover letter; let us know who you are and why this experience makes sense for you. Also, please specify when you would be able to start working with us and how long of a commitment you think you are able to make.

We will be accepting applications for this internship until Monday, April 17th, and we expect to contact qualified candidates starting the following week.
