The personal essay is probably the most intimate literary genre. The "I" of the writer becomes a vivid presence who confides in the reader, challenges the reader, invites the reader to enter into an odd kind of friendship. There's an art to living on the page, and in this three-hour seminar we'll make a start at learning it. We'll begin with an overview of the personal essay, go on to discuss readings (distributed in advance) and end by generating new work in response to writing exercises designed to teach students how to present themselves - in all their complexity and contradiction - to the reader.
Kirkus Reviews
[Gordon's] writing...is skillful, and her account is replete with lurid scenes.... A wistful coming-of-age tale.
Los Angeles Times Book Review
Gordon...writes lyrically and convincingly about the subtle joys of childhood in the second half of the book...
New York Times Book Review
Gordon is - as readers of her first memoir...know - a terrific writer.
