2007 Summer Internship Program

Public/ Private Ventures (P/PV), a national action-based research, public policy and program development organization, is seeking applications for internship positions for the summer of 2007.

P/PV is based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with offices in New York City and Oakland, California. P/PV’s mission is to improve the effectiveness of social policies, programs and community initiatives, especially as they affect youth and young adults. In carrying out this mission, P/PV works with philanthropies, the public and business sectors, and nonprofit organizations.

Responsibilities

Interns will primarily be located in the Philadelphia office: two interns will work from the New York City office. (The California office will have no internship positions during summer 2007.) Each intern will be assigned to at least one project. P/PV creates and manages projects in a number of areas, including:

  • After-school programs, including literacy and youth development initiatives
  • Mentoring programs
  • Community- and faith-based initiatives
  • Community health initiatives
  • Higher achievement studies
  • Labor market initiatives, including research on employment and training programs
  • Communications, public affairs, media relations

Involvement in these projects may include:

  • Assistance in report writing
  • Survey development
  • Traveling to sites that are implementing various programs
  • Data collection and management
  • Quantitative and/or qualitative data analysis
  • Program evaluation
  • Helping programs build capacity
  • Conducting literature reviews

  • In addition to specific responsibilities for each project, interns will become working members of a department, participating in day-to-day operations. During the course of the summer, interns will also be exposed to the working of the organization as a whole. Specific project descriptions will be available during the interview and screening process.

Qualifications

  • An undergraduate or graduate degree in social policy or related areas, including sociology, psychology, economics, communications, urban development and human development;
  • Knowledge of contemporary social issues, urban poverty or education;
  • Experience or academic training in program planning, research or evaluation (helpful); and
  • Experience working with minority/ low income communities (a plus).


Skills

Excellent writing and verbal skills, analytical and conceptual abilities, and the ability to work well independently are required.

Length of Internship

Internships will begin in June and will run for 8 to 12 weeks.

Salary

Salary for the internship is $500 per week in Philadelphia. Salary is higher in New York City because of relatively higher costs of living.

Interested candidates should submit: (1) a cover letter summarizing their background, reasons for applying, specific interests and type of work they would like to do while at P/PV; (2) a resume; (3) a list of completed courses; (4) a brief writing sample on a social policy or research topic (not to exceed 10 pages); and (5) contact information for three references.

Candidates should indicate their location preference in their cover letters.

  • The Philadelphia office focuses on all P/PV interest areas.
  • The New York City office focuses on communications and workforce development.
