David M. Walker is the nation’s chief accountability officer and head of the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO). GAO’s mission is to help improve the performance and assure the accountability of the federal government for the benefit of the American people. GAO has earned a reputation for professional, objective, fact-based, nonpartisan, nonideological, fair and balanced reviews of government programs and operations.

The federal government today faces a number of sustainability challenges including fiscal, environmental, health care, and national security, to name a few. These challenges are complex and tend to grow with the passage of time. At the same time, many basic government programs, policies, operations and structures are significantly out of date, often reflecting conditions from past decades. Comptroller General Walker will focus on what the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) is doing to help the Congress address these challenges while also "leading by example" in connection with GAO's own transformation effort.
